Road Patrol

Duties

Patrol Operations consists of an Assistant Chief, a Major, (2) Captains and (12) Sergeants.  Officers and Sergeants work a 4 on/4 off, 11-hour schedule

Here is a short breakdown of the duties typically associated within this division:

  1. Routine Patrol: Officers assigned to patrol divisions conduct routine patrols within designated areas, whether on foot, bicycle, or in patrol vehicles. They actively monitor their assigned areas to deter crime, enforce laws, and respond promptly to calls for service.

  2. Emergency Response: Patrol officers are often the first responders to emergency situations such as accidents, crimes in progress, or medical emergencies. They must assess the situation, take appropriate action to ensure public safety, and request additional assistance as needed.

  3. Crime Prevention: Patrol officers engage in proactive efforts to prevent crime within their communities. This may involve conducting community outreach programs, participating in neighborhood watch initiatives, and collaborating with community members and organizations to address safety concerns.

  4. Traffic Enforcement: Patrol officers enforce traffic laws to ensure the safe flow of traffic and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents. They may conduct traffic stops, issue citations for traffic violations, and investigate traffic-related offenses such as driving under the influence.

  5. Investigative Support: While patrol officers primarily focus on immediate response and prevention, they also play a role in supporting ongoing investigations conducted by specialized units within the department. This may involve gathering preliminary information, securing crime scenes, and assisting detectives with follow-up inquiries.

  6. Community Engagement: Patrol officers serve as liaisons between the police department and the community they serve. They interact with residents, business owners, and community groups to address concerns, build trust, and foster positive relationships. This may include attending community meetings, hosting events, and participating in outreach activities.

  7. Critical Incident Response: In addition to their day-to-day duties, patrol officers are trained to respond to critical incidents such as active shooter situations, hostage crises, and natural disasters. They work collaboratively with specialized units and other agencies to mitigate the threat and protect public safety.
