[ARCHIVED] Protect Yourself: Keep Your Accounts Secure to Prevent Fraud

Protect yourself! Keep your accounts secure to prevent fraud and identity theft.

Your internet habits could be putting your data, financial information and identity at risk. Scammers are always looking for victims, hoping to steal their identity or financial information. Follow these tips to keep your information secure and lower your risk of becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft:

  • Use strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts and change them regularly to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts to add an additional layer of security.
  • Shop exclusively on secure websites with https:// in the URL and a padlock symbol before entering your payment information.
  • Limit the personal information you share on social media to reduce the risk of identity theft.
  • Install and regularly update antivirus software on all your devices to safeguard against malware and viruses.

If you need to report a fraud or scam, head to the FTC’s website or www.reportfraud.ftc.gov. To check if your email address has been in a data breach head to www.havibeenpwned.com.
