[ARCHIVED] Scam Alert: Scam Phone Calls

Scam Alert: receiving phone calls from unknown numbers? It may be a scam.

Has someone called you claiming to work at a government agency? Be wary, it could be a scam.

Scammers often call victims pretending to work for government agencies such as the IRS or FDOT. They often demand payment or threaten you with legal action. These scammers will try to:

  • Keep you on the phone for as long as possible
  • Ask for personal information
  • Pose as someone you know or trust

NEVER give your personal information, such as your social security number or bank details, over the phone unless you’re sure of the caller’s identity. Be wary of callers claiming to be from a government agency or company. If you receive an unsolicited call demanding payment, hang up immediately. Verify the claim with the company directly.

If you receive a suspicious call or a call from an unknown number, let voicemail screen the call. Call back only if you know the number is legitimate.
