As colder weather settles in, many residents turn to portable electric space heaters to take the chill out of their homes. While these heaters can be helpful, they must be used carefully to prevent fires and injuries.

Space Heater Safety Checklist

  • Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.

  • Place heaters on a solid, flat surface.

  • Use models with overheat protection and auto shut-off.

  • Plug directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord.

  • Turn heaters off and unplug them when you leave the room or go to bed.

  • Keep heaters out of walkways and away from children and pets.

  • Never block an exit with a heater.
